Essential Fats are very important to the brain. Review the key information below and note that I do not recommend fish oils. There is a more effective source that has been recently discover but that it has been used by other cultures for hundreds of years. Curious? Keep on reading and connect with me.
From Beyond Health:
Fats that Make You Happy; Fats that Make You Blue
Fat Attack . . . our brains need the right kind of fatsApart from water, the human brain is made up mostly of fat. Yes, we are all fatheads! So it just makes sense that the kinds of fat we eat are going to impact the brain, including those brain centers that influence emotion. It boils down to this: healthy fats like omega 3s and olive oil tend to improve your mood; unhealthy fats like transfats tend to depress it.
Spanish researchers followed more than 12,000 university graduates and their diets for 6-1/2 years. They found that diets rich in transfats increased the risk of depression by 50%. On the other hand, those whose diets were high in olive oil and fish oil (omega 3s) had a low risk of depression.
In the US, where we consume on average five times as much transfat as Europeans do, the risk for depression is without doubt considerably higher. Making matters worse, the wrong fats can screw up general body chemistry leading to all manner of diseases.
For more on choosing the right fats see, ”Oils-Choosing the Right Ones” in our Article Archives.

Omega 3s — The Happy Fats
Happy Fat. . . many of us need an oil change.
Numerous studies have associated omega 3 fats — found especially in fish and flax oil and to an appreciable degree in walnuts — with improved mood, especially when it is taken by people who were previously deficient. Unfortunately this may include as much as 90% of our population!
The importance of omega 3s to brain health was first reported in the 1970s. At that time, Prof. Michael Crawford of the Institute of Brain Chemistry and Human Nutrition in England predicted an epidemic of brain and psychological problems due to eating the wrong fats comparable to our heart disease epidemic unless drastic changes were made in the average diet.
Unfortunately, diets in both the US and Europe have only gotten worse, and we have epidemics of brain and mood disorders on both continents. In Great Britain, for example, the national cost of brain disorders is now higher than the costs for cancer and heart disease combined.
It’s hard to get enough omega 3 fat without supplementing. The traditional source of omega 3 fats is fish, however due to contamination of our waterways, I recommend getting most of your omega 3s from cod liver oil or fish oil supplements that have been purified of contaminants or flaxseed oil, available at health food stores and at Beyond Health.
Mood is influenced by many factors. You need a complete array of vitamins and minerals to support mental health. But if, like so many, you are low in good fats and high in bad, an ”oil change” can make a miraculous difference.

Hi Cheryl!
This is a great article that gets to the crux of a lot of our health problems and I love the analogy of an ’oil change’!
It would be great to hear how people have improved their health by adding nourishing unsaturated fatty acids to their diet.
If you have a story about using healthy fats to share please do so!
In our home we eat flax, hemp, olive, sesame, walnut oils - always cold pressed and unrefined. We also eat avocados and lots of raw nuts and seeds every day. We do not drink cow’s milk and instead use raw almond or cashew milk and sometimes organic soy milk in coffee, tea and recipes.
Recently, one of my clients, also a Reiki Master, had a very bad varicose vein pushing out of her leg with an infection festering. It looked very painful, but I worried about more than the health of her veins, the rest of her body and arteries must be suffering too!
One day in June, she was treating me for the pain of a broken piece of bone between my knee joints while I was awaiting surgery (for 2 1/2 months I was forced to walk around with a large piece of bone caught between my femur and tibia while I waited for an MRI and surgery). At that time I told her to add hemp oil to her diet every day to help with this issue.
About six months later I saw her and I was amazed that she was so happy about adding 1 tablespoon of hemp oil to her diet almost every day since we had last met. The varicose vein had receded back into her leg and completely healed! She was boasting about losing a small amount of weight and feeling better. Her hair looked very shiny and not so frizzy and her skin was smooth and fresh looking ~ all from one measly tablespoon of high unsaturated fatty acids per day!!
What a story! I told her to bump it up to at least 3 tablespoons and I can’t wait to see her again because I know she will feel even better!
Thanks Lisa. I love my presentation title ”Change Your Oil, Change Your Health!”
This small article just skims the surface. Hemp oil is great because it is balanced, more so than flax.
Sounds like you are careful with your fats…and very little refined vegetable oils. These rancid, oxidized and imbalanced fats are causing us lots of issues. We do need to know that cold pressed sources must be stored properly. There are very good articles and studies that show fish oils are causing us more harm and that too much omega 3 could be problematic.
Balance is key! I consume whole nuts and seeds, some olive oil but include a good mammalian source of long chain fatty acids. Of course all derived from whole sources and unrefined. Let me know if you would like the key info on why fish oils are harming us!
This info needs to get out there because more and more healthcare practitioners and MDs are telling people to take fish oils. Thanks so much for the lovely story with the hemp oil. Hemp oil is great and great in skincare too. Thanks for sharing!
